Character's gender: female Series the character is from: RG Veda Point in canon they're being taken from: after her death Brief background: Karyoubinga is the younger only sister of Karura-ou, who is queen of the Sky City and one of Taishakuten's generals set to protect the southern borders of Tenkai from invasions of the evil mazoku. Despite her young age, Karyoubinga is widely renowned as the most gifted singer in all of Tenkai - however, being physically weak and sickly since birth*, she can never leave her home in order to perform for others, since breathing anything but the pure air of the castle in the Sky City will cause her to die before long. Despite working under orders of Taishakuten, Karura-ou has never agreed with his cruel ways, and, upon meeting Yasha-ou and the small group of rebels he has gathered, she confesses that she wishes she could join him in his quest to overthrow the very king she serves. The safety of her Clan - and in particular that of her little sister - is what prevents her from doing so. That is soon to change, however, when Taishakuten as punishment for Karura-ou's associating with the outlaws kidnaps the little girl and brings her to his castle in Toriten to sing in celebration of his 300th year of rule. As soon as Karura-ou learns of this she rushes to her sister's rescue, but when faced with the threat of her entire clan being punished if she dares attack Tentei, she hesitates, and Karyoubinga remains imprisoned for the duration of the festival, which lasts three days, growing weaker by the hour. On its final day, all the highest nobles are invited to Toriten to hear the promised duet between Tenkai's most talented harpist and singer. Karura-ou is present as well, and, outraged at seeing her little sister in such a state, attempts to free her by force. Taishakuten tells Karyoubinga that she must sing, or he will hurt her sister, and so Karyoubinga gathers her last ounce of strength, singing only for her sister to her final moment, her last wish being that with her gone, her beloved sister will now finally be free. * Exactly what illness she suffers from is never specified. It seems to be some kind of mysterious Victorian disease that causes nothing but the occasional fever and coughing fits. Yeah. Personality: Like many children used to constant illness, Karyoubinga never complains about her unfortunate situation and instead cherishes the little joys she has in life, like the opportunity to have her singing accompanied by Kendappa-ou, Tenkai's finest harpist. She knows there is little she can do to help the people she loves, but still readily offers what she can give to comfort and thank her sister. Karyoubinga is sweet, cheerful and adores her older sister above everthing else, but also has a lingering feeling of being a constant burden to her. While CLAMP characters do tend to put their most beloved before themselves, there are many things that indicate that Karyoubinga is an exceptionally selfless little girl: Karura-ou's main argument for her to do her best to get better is that the little nightingale with which Karyoubinga shares her life will not get well until she does; when she is captured by Taishakuten, she begs him to let her go because "her sister will worry"; and, ultimately, what compels her to sing herself to death in Taishakuten's halls is not any promise that she will be released or her life spared once she does, but the threat that Karura-ou will be punished if she does not. | ||||||||||
